MACAU Asia’s own "Little Europe", Macau gives visitors a sample of European culture with its cobblestone streets, lavish squares and colonial buildings. Like Hong Kong, Macau is a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, hence, it has a more progressive economy and is relatively more open to tourism. Travellers’ time and attention will be split among the city’s historical highlights, numerous casinos, old churches and Buddhist temples. Most of the local populace are Chinese but there is still a small Portuguese community, as Macau was previously administered by Portugal as a province. This mixture of Chinese and Portuguese cultures will create a uniquely rich experience for any visitor. Destination Guide | Photo courtesy of the Macau Tourism Board |
