Broadband Providers Switching to Get Easier

You don?t have to look far to find a cheap broadband deal these days. With so many deals on offer, and with mergers and acquisitions between telcos paving the way for an increase in ?broadband bundles? available to consumers, soon those without broadband will begin to feel left behind by the madding crowd.

Connecting to the Internet for the first time in your home or office is as easy as securing a fixed telephone line (which you probably already have) and signing up to one of the dozens of Broadband Providers offering deals on the market today.

Switching broadband providers, if you believe you have found a more suitable service for your particular needs is, however, not as easy.

Switching broadband providers more easily would certainly be a welcome addition to the market. Currently, if you decide to switch, your broadband provider will probably use at least one of the following 'lock-in' tactics:

• cancellation fees
• minimum 12-month contracts
• equipment leases
• not providing MAC codes

As a result, Ofcom have been conducting an examination of broadband services in the UK. The regulator wants to release customers from such burdens and ensure there are no obstacles in the way of customers who wish to move between companies and/or products.

With the current system, the customer who wishes to switch will be required to contact their current broadband provider (the one they're going to leave) in order to acquire a MAC - a Migration Authorisation Code. The ISP must then hand over the code to the new company, so the broadband connection can be transferred. It is a process that is not always quick or easy - and some providers do not currently provide MAC codes at all.

Ofcom is proposing that broadband users should have easy access to their migration code and should not need to ask their existing provider for it. It could, for example, be printed clearly on monthly bills. This would eliminate at least the first gruelling step in the migration process.

If such regulations are put in place, consumers would be able to pick and choose more easily from a range of different broadband internet services and providers, without the need for a BT Broadband phone line.

If Ofcom is successful, the changes should increase competition in the already competitive telecoms marketplace. Early signs indicate that things are already beginning to change.

Since the regulator began shaking up the industry a few years ago and slowly putting an end to BT?s monopolisation, several major deals between industry heavyweights have occurred.

This includes the merger of NTL and Telewest, who currently offer phone, broadband, and cable TV packages. They are now looking to take over Virgin mobile, and if they succeed they will be able to offer mobile phone plans in their bundles, and of course utilise the powerful Virgin brand name. Also on the cards is Wanadoo?s plan to re-brand as Orange, which will make the mobile phone outfit a single brand name for all mobile, broadband and other converged telecoms services.

Not to be outdone, the UK?s largest satellite TV provider, Sky, have acquired broadband Local Loop Unbundling operator Easynet in order to give it the opportunity to offer its existing eight million satellite TV subscribers the triple-package deal of TV, phone and internet.

Video podcasting is a fantastic way to stay in touch with family members around the corner or around the world.

A podcast is an audio or video file distributed by RSS software that can be downloaded on the Internet. But rather than normal audio or video files, which can only be downloaded when the user decides, once a podcast has been created, subscribers automatically receive new episodes.

This is because of RSS software. RSS - which stands for Really Simple Syndication - is a technology that feeds a description of web content with a link to the original content, When content is updated, the RSS feeds a headline and description to subscribers automatically.

When combined with a podcast, it allows subscribers to see when a new episode of the podcast has been created, and it will automatically be downloaded to subscribers.

Business Prospects Of Wimax An ISP point of View

The prospects for WiMAX technology as a viable business opportunity are often the subject of debate amidst numerous actual or perceived challenges. Applying these innovative insights can make these arguments and challenges disappear.

Unlike most people's expectation of rural deployments, you might consider targeting SME's in urban areas. There are several reasons for this:

? There is a growing demand in business for bandwidth capable of carrying symmetrical traffic, for voice, applications and uploading of larger files.

? There is a small but growing need for separated last mile services. Currently, however many wired service providers you have, they all use the incumbents' last mile infrastructure based on its nearest telephone exchange location unless you have paid for an expensive dig from the next nearest exchange. This leads to single points of failure and the potential for business communications to be down for days, as can happen say with a cable duct fire somewhere in the spoke.

Your worst case environment would be a very high-density urban area with lots of interfering buildings, has multiple fibre networks, ADSL and SDSL in every exchange, hundreds of competing suppliers, a restrictive property planning regime with many 'listed' buildings, and no spare spectrum for FWA except the public 5.8GHz band.

To do this, because of the scale of competition from other service providers, your model needs to be disruptive. It has to offer things that businesses need (like QoS, toll-quality VoIP, high-quality video, symmetric bandwidth, higher capacities and network separation etc) at a lower cost.

This means stripping all unnecessary cost out of the model. You'll benefit from a quality RF planning tool that gives you a major advantage over other operators - mapping exactly where you can provide service, how to set up the customer antenna, what bandwidth can be achieved etc, based on your base-stations. You need to know exactly how to tune base-stations to avoid blackspots - without needing an RF team.

Although Wi-Fi and WiMAX often get confused, they are very different from an operators perspective. Wi-Fi is plug and play with no control over the wireless interface. WiMAX is not, it behaves more like a carrier ATM network. Wi-Fi is built into laptops and handsets, whereas FWA WiMAX requires larger standalone receivers (yours should mount on customer rooftops for optimum utilty).

The benefit is that WiMAX is very spectrally efficient, at least 50% more so than 3G networks, so it has much higher data-carrying capabilities in limited spectrum. All Wi-Fi shares the same public spectrum - WiMAX can work across a wide range. Wi-Fi provides service over a range of 100m, your WiMAX needs to provide 10Mbps over a range of 1.3km from a base-station non-line-of sight.

WiMAX can create carrier-class networks, Wi-Fi cannot ? not even with mesh networks. However, Wi-Fi with WiMAX backhaul gets some of the benefits of WiMAX as the backhaul such as VPN?s. A lot of WiMAX customer equipment will come with Wi-Fi built in.

Don?t wait for mobile (802.16e) WiMAX ? your experience with vendors may be that they're around fourteen months to two years behind on their promised delivery dates, and further delays could occur to key requirements. Don?t expect good enough 802.16e equipment to build a network with until late 2007 at the earliest, and no usable CPE until 2008 ? as it?s mobile battery life is crucial and that will take time to get right.

There are big enough markets for FWA now. The most important thing is to grab the scarce resources first ? spectrum etc ? and make them yours. Except in those undeveloped countries without a mobile operator, mobile WiMAX will be very difficult to establish against incumbent operators with large installed bases because the areas covered are important to customers ? which is not a consideration for FWA.

Wireless Broadband Hijacking a 21st Century Crime

For those who may be wondering exactly what the ?digital age? is ? this may be an indication?

As technology evolves over time so do many aspects of our everyday lives. Increasingly sophisticated technology may help improve the quality of our lives, but it?s not all good news, Sadly, the more sophisticated technology becomes, the more sophisticated criminals become as well.

Take for example the newly born and rapidly evolving crime of ?wireless broadband hijacking.? No longer the domain of planes, trains and automobiles ? now criminals are taking over the airwaves.

Wireless Broadband hijacking has been brought to the general public?s attention in Europe through a case in the UK which resulted in a Londoner being fined several hundred pounds and sentenced to a conditional discharge for hijacking a wireless broadband connection.

So what exactly is it? Wireless hijacking involves piggybacking an unsecured wireless network without the supplier?s permission. In the London case it is believed that a member of the public piggybacked a wireless network of a local resident by using a laptop while sitting in a car parked outside the residence. The hijacker had been seen in the area on several occasions over a three-month period and was reported to police by a neighbour concerned about suspicious activity.

Currently there is an estimated one million wireless broadband users throughout the UK - one of the most litigious countries in the world. What this could mean is that while this particular court case is believed to be the first of its kind in the country, it is unlikely to be the last. In fact if the USA (which is THE most litigious country in the world) is any indication, this kind of court case may become all too common. Wireless broadband hijacking is a growing trend in the USA, with broadband suppliers increasingly coming under pressure to provide additional security.

If all this seems like the justice system gone mad, consider the case of an American man who was sentenced to nine years in a US jail for the far more serious crime of siphoning credit card numbers over the wireless network of a hardware store. There have also been incidences where pedophiles deliberately leave their wireless networks open so that, if caught, they can claim to police that is wasn't them using the network for illegal purposes, and that it must have been hijacked by someone else.

Such a defense would hold little water, however, as the end user who installed and operates the network has ultimate responsibility for any criminal activity that takes place on that network. This may include launching a hack attack or downloading illegal pornography. Despite this, businesses and residential users continue to fail to take that responsibility seriously by securing their networks. A recent survey found that more than a third of wireless networks in the UK had the basic security features turned off. Most had failed to turn on the encryption that scrambles the data traffic between users and the access point.

It is therefore obvious that the issue of wi-fi hijacking is far more serious that people seeking a free ride on unsecured networks. Prosecuting people for serious crimes committed on such networks could result in a legal arm-wrestle between the actual offender and the supplier who failed to secure their network.

No doubt the courts will issue the blame to one side or the other as more and more cases surface over the next few years. In the meantime, however, it may be for the best to secure your wireless network.

Remotely Connecting by Satellite To the Hospital 2005

Hospital?s and the Medical Professionals associated with them across America have discovered during the last few years that a great deal of efficiency can be accomplished by utilizing the World Wide Web to connect Doctors, Surgeons, Medical Transcribers and remote or mobile Clinics together. A specialist can instantly review an X-Ray or medical chart half way around the world or from a very remote area. Although most of this connectivity is accomplished utilizing high speed terrestrial internet connections like a T1, Cable or DSL connections, there are many areas in the U.S. where this type of internet connection isn?t available.

Satellite internet connectivity has advanced enough during the last year or so to allow a specialist to view highly detailed graphical information (x-rays or scans from MRI equipment) in a HIPPA compliant internet environment that can be deemed ?high speed?. The equipment needed to accomplish this is more expensive than a DSL or Cable connection and there are somewhat more complicated security measures needed; however, more and more medical group?s are seeing the benefits from this type of connection and adding satellite internet ?ground stations? at the remote homes of resident doctors, medical professionals like transcribers and smaller clinics they serve.

The early efforts to provide satellite internet to this field were frankly miserable failures??either not HIPPA compliant or speeds so slow you could have gotten a courier to bring it faster! DirecWay and Starband solutions just don?t have enough upload speed to handle this type of activity. When you add nearly 2 seconds of latency inherent in this type of satellite connection, you have a bunch of frustrated folks!

The equipment which will be the standard for several years to come includes an outdoor dish (1.2 meter is now standard), coax cabling no greater than 200? to an indoor unit which handles routing, modem functions and provides the required security. The upload transmitters are much more powerful now??up to 4 watts (compared to 1 watt or less in earlier solutions). They are capable of instantly ?ramping up? the wattage during inclement weather to all but eliminate rain fade and can provide sustained speeds in the T1 or better range if required.

What does all of this magic cost? The costs have dropped precipitously during the last year as a result of two main factors: underutilized transponders on many Ku band satellites covering North America and good ole competition between the hardware manufacturers. In 2002 a .74 meter dish setup with a ? watt transmitter ran over $2,800 for equipment and upwards of $150 per month?..and did a miserable job! In 2005, the same basic cost will bring a 1.2 meter dish and speeds of nearly 1200 kbps download and a sustained 128 kbps or better upload??including a Quality of Service (QOS) guarantee of speed from the internet service provider! Higher speeds are available for additional cost (as high as 2040+kbps downloads and 1028+kbps uploads).

These speeds combined with much lower latency (these internet providers use IP technology throughout the trip through space ? not Digital Video Broadcast translated into IP) provide a reliable, secure and fast experience. For the professional or clinic unable to obtain terrestrial high speed internet, it is a great solution.
