Why We Blog (whether we realize it or not)

I heard a quote from John Mayer on the radio saying that he was considering deleting his Twitter account because he wanted to remove his need for external validation.  Hearing this made me realize that a major purpose of social networking sites, and the reason why they are so popular, is that they fill our need for external validation. Even make it grow, especially in the internet generation where fame is more achievable than ever.

Before Facebook or Twitter, we didn't have a need to post summaries of our days, our favorite song lyrics, or our deepest secrets on the internet in 140 characters or less and expect a comment or two or ten.

It's the same reason we blog here on Xanga. If your site is public, it's likely you crave comments. Even those of you who say you write for yourselves; You could "write for yourself" just as easily in a journal with a lock and key. The point of a public blog is the comments (and the discussions they create). And those comments give us external validation.

But this brings up another topic: More Here...

Don't Waste My Time
My friend is dating this guy and she knows its not going anywhere, but she settles and says well it's not like i am dating anyone else right now.   We are comfortable and I will hang out with him for now.

This is the most flawed logic ever, I tell her. More Here...

American Culture is the Most Extreme in Seeking Beauty

Maybe I dwell on things way too much, but I still have much to get off my chest. I cannot believe how many ignorant people make it into college today, and have the nerve to be so confident in their ignorance. Hello! America is not the only existing country in the world!

Today during my Women Studies class discussion, I may have gotten a little more heated than I should’ve.   A lot of times I am very opinionated in class, but this discussion brought something else out of me. A group from the class was doing a presentation on beauty in other cultures. Cool, I thought. I always am fascinated about cultures’ fashions, and was glad a group was reaching out of the boundaries from the United States. More Here...

High School Marriages
I'm graduating this year. By the time you're a senior, you realize the idea of eternal high school relationships and childhood love is something mostly reserved for the movies. I know one or two couples that have been together since forever. The first couple has dated since the summer before freshmen year and the other couple got together freshmen year. The rest of the kids that promised each other forever, that exchanged notes saying they were soulmates, and quoted romantic lyrics to each other now are with someone else. As I'm nearing graduation, however, I'm noticing quite a few of my classmates are getting married.

They have rings. They're moving in with each other. They've got apartments picked out and are talking about the children they intend on having. Everyone dreams about the time they'll be with someone at some point. I just think that fresh out of high school is too soon to be thinking along those lines. I mean it's a time when most are figuring out who they are, what they want to do, and where they'll be heading. There's so many things that are left to enjoy in the last of your youth that you'll have to miss out on. Some might be emotionally and mentally ready to commit themselves like that - to sort their lives out that young - but I think a lot of them don't know what they're facing until it's too late.

How do you know at that age if the person you're dating then is what you'll want later? More Here...

I Have The Perfect Body. I Have a Perfect Mind. I Never Get Sick. I'm Just Perfect.

Genetic engineering. It seems a little scary if you ask me. Movies like Gattaca, The Island, and I-Robot always make me wonder just how far off this technology is. Not too long ago, the plots in these thought-provoking movies seemed far-fetched. Now it seems like they could actually happen in today’s world. Remember it was only 1997 when Dolly, the first sheep cloned from an adult somatic cell, made a big splash on the international scene.

Fast forward to 2010, to date, there is not a cloned human in existence (that we know about). Regardless, we’ve made some major progress when it comes to understanding DNA and manipulating an organism’s genes. Have we made too much progress? More Here...

Your Parents Will Love You a Little Less.

Parents are supposed to love their children unconditionally, no matter what kind of flaws they hold, or what kind of mistakes they're bound to make in their lifetime of opportunities. I don't think that there is a single Mother or Father out there who doesn't swear left, down and diagonally that they will always love and care for their child(ren) through everything.

Honestly, I challenge you to find a parent who tells you that they will not love their child always and unconditionally. It would be almost the same as our Prime Minister telling us everything is going to be all right in the middle of a war. No parents do not in fact love their kids regardless of all things, and no eveyrthing wouldn't be okay. However, reading and looking through all sorts of xanga posts, and posts elsewhere as well, it looks to me as if a parent's love is all just a mythical legend. More Here...

If You Give a Guy a Necktie...
In 1985 book "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" by Laura Numeroff a boy gives in to a rodent's request for a cookie. Once the rat gets his cookie he wants milk, then a straw to go with that and it keeps going on from there.  Even though this book is over two decades old it has the universal theme of "one thing leads to another" and if the author wanted to make yet another sequel to this book (there are nine) I would gladly give her the rights to my story for free.

One day I was in a store, just browsing.  As I walked by the dress clothes section I made a mental note that it would probably be a good idea to iron my "formal wear" before my friend's upcoming wedding. More Here...

The Non-Boyfriend
I guess I'm missing out, but ever heard of non-boyfriends and non-girlfriends? These are not to be confused with friends with benefits. In some cases, it's the complete opposite.

He's the guy you go out to dinner with twice a week, she's the girl you vent to and go to concerts with. Yet the other person isn't aware that you've dubbed him/her your non-whatever, or you guys have been friends for too long to become an actual couple. You're free to date other people, but you don't really want to because of your feelings for this person.

I look back on my relationship history and realize that I've had quite a few non-boyfriends.

During one summer, a guy friend and I became extremely close. More Here...

Cleaning up the Top Toolbar...

We just rolled a few tweaks to the top toolbar:

  • Expanded "Update" Menu - we've replaced the old "blog now!" menu (which had options only for adding weblogs, photos and pulses) with a *full menu* of update options *including* new "edit" links to give you easy access to your various manager pages (e.g. photo manager)
  • Prominent "Help" Link - we've added a prominent link to our help forums, so you can easily get answers to pressing questions like, "When is Xanga going to launch the customizable private pages?!" (A: soon! This toolbar update is actually part of that project.)
  • A Bit Better Organized - in the old toolbar, the menu of links under your username had a strange mix of private and public pages; in this updated toolbar, the menus under each link are organized as follows:
    • under your username - links to your private pages (plus your current credit count, which is basically a private piece of info)
    • under "view site" - links to your public pages
    • under "update" - full menu of update & edit links

Also, if you're using Xanga Themes, you'll see that the "edit theme" link now appears on *all* of your public pages so it should be much easier to find!

Just another quick update as we continue our Xanga spring cleaning...

Now back to your regularly scheduled blogging.

Optimizing the Frontpage...

We've just rolled some minor updates to the frontpage to try to optimize a few things.

before
after

In case you're having trouble spotting the specific changes, here's what's new:

  • Showing Longer Titles in the 4-Picture Module - a lot of you pointed out that titles were regularly getting cut off in that module, so we've made the text smaller and moved from just two lines of text to three lines of text for each title. Now you should be able to see the full title for almost all the posts.
  • Moving Top Blogs a Little Higher on the Page - as you can see from the before & after screenshots, the Top Blogs module ends up a little higher on the page after these latest tweaks

But wait, you say... how can you add longer titles without pushing top blogs *down*? Well, we started by hiding those little labels that used to show above the pictures (Parenting, Dating, Beauty, etc.). But because some of you mentioned that you liked those labels, we've used some CSS trickery to make them available - just mouse over any of the pictures and you'll see the label!

Just keepin' y'all in the loop.

Car Rental Aside, Adulthood Is Mostly Overrated
Parents, thanks for teaching your kids not to be brats in department stores and that it's not okay to belch so loudly in restaurants unless they also excuse themselves just as loudly.  Thank you for keeping them from acting in ways causing them to appear before Judge Mathis, Judge Joe Brown, Judge Judy, or any of those other judge shows that law school professors abhor.  I appreciate those of you who've taught your princes and princesses the importance of being well-mannered around other adults who might record them on YouTube and make them the scourge of the Internet.  I have no kids, so I won't presume I know what more you could do to teach them the ways of maturity, except to make one suggestion that may not even have anything to do with what you've done or not done to fashion them into contributing members of social security... I mean society:

Please tell your kids that it's okay for them to be kids. More Here...

I Used to Be Ugly
Growing up, I was the ugly kid. Or at least that is how my peers made me feel with their constant taunting and nasty words. They may have been correct in calling me ugly. I was chubby, pimple-ridden, and most of all, had the most terrible style of dressing.
