How to Re-Build Your Life: A List
When everything feels like it is crashing down on you, is that not the perfect time to destroy everything and start fresh? Trying to hold things together, things only get worse. Sometimes we need to suck it up and try to makeover our lives, in every aspect. This is how I plan to do it.

Do You Regret Your Major?

Most of my friends and I are liberal arts majors. We spend $37,000 per year indulging in history, art history, literature, philosophy, government and other fascinating "useless" subjects that won't necessarily lead to a job at Goldman Sachs or the cure for AIDS, but do teach invaluable communication, critical thinking and reading skills.  We also make snarky comebacks that only our intellectual peers could understand. (You don't like this blog post? Well, Proust would disagree.) Yes, we took it seriously when our high school counselors told us to pursue our dreams.

However, the reality is a lot less rosy. With the rising unemployment rate, even engineering students are finding it difficult to land entry level jobs. Law school used to be the catch-all backup plan for humanities majors who failed to land a job writing for the New York Times, but with the poor economy, the number of law school applications are skyrocketing for the same number of spots, and the number of associate positions are shrinking just like every other sector of the economy.

Once upon a time, everyone majored in the humanities: when Harvard was first founded, the most popular subjects were theology, law, literature, and government. However, that was before the explosion of more lucrative fields of science, later social science and now information science. Nowadays, consolidation and contraction seems to be the theme in most humanities departments as universities struggle to weather the recession. Will this trend continue? How should humanities students cope with this economy? Are we living in an increasingly inarticulate, unexamined world?
Are you a humanities major? Do you regret your decision?

Favorite Xangan Categories of 2010
The results are in and the day has come. If you have been living under a rock or have no clue what I am talking about, I ran a contest called the Favorite Xangan Categories a few weeks ago. The contest featured 15+ categories for xangans to vote for their favorite xangans. (i.e. me voting WongTonShrimp for Best Xanga Pulser).

The contest was created in hope to make exposure for other xangans around Xanga-Land. Originally it was created to help Xanga-Land from transitioning away from the Xanga Crush phase and into the phase where other Xangans become appreciated.

Well here are the results and I hope you enjoy: More Here...

Memories of 9/11
I'm not sure exactly what made me think of this today, but I've been meaning to write about it.

Childhood memories are often so very vague, but my memory of 9/11 is one of the sharpest.

I remember I was in junior high, and I was a little over a month away from turning 12.   The principle got on the announcements and told us that we were going into lock down, and reminded us that we were totally safe in this school.   Because they told us that we were safe, but not what from, or what was going on, we naturally assumed that we were not.   The rumor going around was that schools all over the country were getting bombed. More Here...

Top 10 Things Not To Do In A Relationship

Having been in a relationship that lasted almost three and a half years, I have learned some of the ins and outs of what one should and shouldn't do in a relationship.  There were many times when I probably should not have done the things that I did, and times when he should not have done things.  If these things are happening in your relationship... something might be wrong.

those who still in doubt after second maillist :)

Personal Search, Customizable Private Pages, and Easier Navigation: a Preview...
As promised, we've been working on adding a search box to the private page...  you can see it in the upper left side of this preview screenshot:

While we were at it, we realized something kinda neat.  We could offer a theme-like system that lets you customize your private page.  You could easily add a header image, change the main colors, and tweak the links too - like in the following screenshot:

If you click the little "customize - new!" link right next to "Update Your Site", you'll see a new set of options to customize the look of your private pages. It works on all private pages that have the same basic layout as the "Universal Inbox" page: subscriptions, messages, feedback log, etc.

You can use it to make your private pages look like this:

Or this...

Or any of these...

Or thousands of other looks!

These private pages are a little too complicated to work with full Xanga Themes or "Look & feel" settings (though we're working on this one). But with these new, simple customization options - add a custom header, change trim & link colors, etc. - we hope you'll be able to make your private pages feel like home.

While we were adding the search box and looking into customizable private pages, we also considered tweaking the navigation a bit to make it easier to find key pages: your subs page, messages page, and private page.  Also, we took out some of the images above the posting buttons - just to make the page seem a bit less cluttered.

You can see those tweaks in the screenshot... what do you think?

These tweaks also gave us a chance to provide easier links to the photo/video managers...  phew!

So in conclusion, these tweaks would allow us to offer:
  1. Personal Search right from your private page
  2. Customizable Private Pages
  3. Easier links to important pages and actions
But rather than just spring this on you guys, we wanted to give you a chance to check it out and let us know what you think!  So in addition to the screenshots above, we've made a live demo:

click here to try it out!
(click the little "customize - new!" link to try out the customization)
(don't worry, it won't affect your own site - it's just a demo)

We'd love to hear your thoughts, so please check it out and then chime in on the comments.

Thanks,
Marc

Gaining Confidence
When I was in high school, I had self-esteem issues. Some of them have carried on to the present, but not many. I like to think that I am a strong person now, but no one is perfect, right?

Growing up, I never really had a person to tell me the good things about myself. More Here...

Jazzed Up Ramen: The Ultimate Starving Student Dinner

After pulling two all-nighters in a row the last couple of days, I came home from class today and just passed out. I woke up from my epic nap at 10:00 and was absolutely starving. Being too hungry to wait to cook a real meal and not wanting to order in another dinner, I turned to that friend of the hungry student: ramen.

I WILL Be a Good Parent
People seem to think that my brass attitude and the fact that I mention that I will "discipline" my child, meaning I will spank them when they deserve it, will make me a "bad parent."

When thinking about it, yeah I would yell a lot, because I get excited easily and I would spank my kid and yes I would say no, but that doesn't mean I would be a bad parent.

Broke or Cheap?

In this harsh economic climate, it can be very difficult for a man to spoil his woman the way she deserves to be spoiled. A compassionate woman will roll with the punches and be understanding of the situation, but who's to say when that compassion is being taken advatage of? Recession or not, some guys are just plain old cheapskates.

The difference between broke guys and cheapskates is all about attitude and gestures. More Here...

Dear My Future Husband: I'm Not Waiting For You Anymore

Dear Future Rad-Awesome-Kick-Ass-Nintendo-Freak Husband,

I want to think your name is something beautiful but I can't be so sure. I want to think you're very tall but, odds are, you aren't. Anyway, I am not writing to you to ask your name or even what it is you look like so I will know you the moment I see you. The real reason I am is so I can tell you that I am no longer waiting for you.

The Types of People at the Gym

Things soulmates do

A soulmate and a spouse are not necessarily one and the same thing, even though they are supposed to be; ideally.  I know that some people are married to their soulmate, but I really do sometimes wonder if that is the norm. From what I've seen in my life of observing, I honestly don't think it's the norm, and if a person can only have one or the other, perhaps it's preferable to have a spouse then a soulmate (because perhaps it is a more solid, predictable type of relationship).

But given the choice I would pick the soulmate, because I am an excitement driven person, and being with my soulmate during the times we were together, was nothing if not exciting. More Here...

Loving Yourself

Guess where I was yesterday?

No one enjoys this, not anyone that I know of anyway.  I put them off as long as possible, I hate it. I saw that sitting in the sink when I was getting undressed  and I wanted to get my clothes back on and get out of Dodge.

Taking care of yourself is part of loving yourself and the ones who care about you.  I am coming to realize how difficult it is to really love yourself 'in action'.  I believe that if you don't, you can not fully accept the love of others or even love in a truly healthy manner.

Would We Scare Guys Off Without Make-up?
Let's face it. Most of us are no Kate Moss. But does that mean we should feel embarassed going au naturel in public?

After a gym session the other day, my male colleagues were having a field day over how stunned they were to see the "real face" of an usually uber cute female colleague. How mean! Should us girls never leave home barefaced so that we will not risk having guys scampering off in fear?

Site-Level Search is Here!
Now you can search within specific blogs on Xanga!

I just used it to find a reaaaaally old post from my own site - these were serious times

Here's how it works:

  • Optional Search Bar for Your Site - help your readers find their favorite posts from your blog!

    • Look & Feel - if you're using the old "Look & feel" system, you've always had the option to add a search bar, but it now includes an option for your readers to search "this site".
    • Xanga Themes - if you're using Xanga Themes, we've added a new search module option for you! Just click to edit your theme >> then click "Add New Modules" >> and then click the new "search" module.

  • Search Your Own Site - obviously, this feature is handy for finding your own posts too...

    • Everyone can search through at least the last two years of public posts (provided you are included in search results)
    • Premium users can search through a full index of all your posts (from the time you joined), including both public and private posts (of course, only you will have access to the search results linking to your private posts)... and your search results are themed, on a new search page hosted on your own site!

Up next: adding search boxes to your private pages for easier access to search. This little project involves some other enhancements to the private pages, which we'll be writing more about shortly. But in the meantime, please try out the new site-level search options and let us know what you think!

You can search my site here: http://marc.xanga.com/search/?q=props. If you want to try search out without installing search in your theme, just change that url to use your ownusername.

How do you want to...die?
I was taking the bus home with some acquaintances and the subject of death came up. Someone said that she wanted to die in a car accident, and I told her I wanted to die of old age, if not, then of a long, terminal illness. Another guy then proceeded to ask me, "You want to live to very old? " And I told him, I want to live for as long as I can. Then he said, "You're going to be all brittle. I don't want to live until I'm old. I don't want to be 60. Maybe I'll want to die around 50"

That was actually quite a shocking response to me. More Here...

I Have Caligynephobia: Fear of Beautiful Women
One of the explanations I can give on my philosophy of never dating the "model" girl really comes down to this: I believe I am caligynephobic. As the title would explain, while gynephobic is the fear of women, caligynephobia is the fear of beautiful women. Surely, to you, this might seem like a silly situation, but I wouldn't really be hasty.
